About Us Our Teachers Karisini Christensen
Karisini Christensen

When did you graduate teacher training?
I’ve been teaching since the turn of the century.

Why do you like it hot?
Sweating makes me feel clean from the inside out. I like Mexican and Thai food too, 5 stars.

Do you remember your first class?
I vaguely remember my first class. I more clearly remember starting a regular practice, and my teacher saying, “I can see your bent knee through your damn hippie pants! Lock your knee and buy some yoga clothes!”

Why did you become a yoga teacher?
Yoga was something I was good at, did regularly, and felt spiritually committed to in some way. Especially Bikram Yoga because of the intense focus. My teacher picked up on this, mentored me, sent me to training and changed my life.

Any tips for new students?
Breathe.

Hey baby, what’s your sign?
Only green lights.

What do you want to be when you grow up?
A Superhero.

Beatles or Elvis?
Elvis.

What was your first concert?
No admittance.

Have you ever fasted?
Yes. Changed my life, although it was unintentional.

How long did it take you to learn to lock your knee?
3 years and I still need reminders and sometimes.

What’s your guilty pleasure?
French fries. Angel.

If you were an appliance what would you be?
An Hitachi Magic Wand.

Have you ever been to Burning Man?
I’ve been a Burner for about a decade, but really, I’m not that old.

What’s the first music you ever bought?
Cindi Lauper or Madonna, and yes, I dressed like them too.

Besides yoga, what do you like to do for fun?
Dancing! Spending time with friends, nature walks on the beach, etc.

Describe your first kiss.
I was 12. It was my first girl/boy party. We played a game in the dark where all the girls had to walk around with the their hands open and guys hands down, find each other and kiss.

Describe your ideal yoga shorts.
I have a variety of shorts I like. Every woman should have a pair of Shakti shorts. I like shorts that are low cut and well fitting. I also love my Brazil Sol capris.

What’s the funniest thing you’ve ever done in class?
Jumped out the window. O.K. there wasn’t class and I just wanted to see the Carnival Parade.

What do you want to gain from your yoga practice?
Mental clarity.

Why do you love SF?
Love Parade, Burning Man Decomp, Gay Pride Parade, and public nudity.

Why do you love the Mission?
Juicy and Steve. Ritual Coffee Roasters, great restaurants and bars, non-pretentiousness and it seems people have fun here.

Favorites:

  • Color: Pink! Not really, I like brown, but pink’s more fun. They go together you know. My friend almost wrote a book about it. Green too (but don’t tell Bikram). And Maroon. I like most colors, especially bright colors people wear in my classes.
  • Animal: Hummingbirds
  • Yoga Pose: Tiger (ie: forearm stand with feet on head from behind)
  • Neighborhood: Grand Lake in Oakland (I’m an East Bay girl)
  • Restaurants: Almost anything on Valencia street. Especially Herbivore and Udupai.
  • Bread: Allergic to wheat!
  • Bikram quote: “93% of the brain cells are sleeping in the cold storage, like the dead meat. You never used it, you never even knew you have it.
And 7% you keep using it again, and again, and again. They’re abused.”
ie: unused and over used brain cells you reactivate during 1/2 tortoise.
  • Books: The Mists of Avalon and Eat, Pray, Love.
  • Movies: I still think Kafka is my favorite movie, although he’s not my favorite writer.
  • Lucky Number: 7
  • Least favorite pose: Locust
